Responsibilities :

The Housing Coordinator will be responsible for managing housing for all IES abroad programs and foster an environment that is welcoming, affirming, and empowering for students of all backgrounds.

The Housing Coordinator will report to the Head of Student Life. 


Student life and housing

Read all student housing forms, essays and medical forms in order to successfully complete housing placements one month prior to the term’s start date and submit to Chicago 

Conduct orientation sessions, whether virtually or in person, for homestay, residence halls and apartment placements, and any other topic related to housing and intercultural competency, including sessions on Hotel/Hostel rules and regulations for standard and customized programs

Communicate actively and in a timely manner with students, professors, and staff members

Communicate with budget officer or accountant if any students have housing billings

Consistently look for alternate housing solutions whether homestays, apartments or residence halls

Communicate, open and follow insurance claims that are related to housing (liability insurance, housing insurance involving students, host families or housing providers) with broker or insurance company

Help monitor student welfare, advise, council, arbitrate and serve as resource for additional physical or mental care – including accompanying students to care giving facilities. 


Host Families

Visit families, vet and provide training to new host families

Clearly communicate IES Abroad housing policy and expectations to host families

Mediate misunderstandings or conflicts, and provide solutions to students experiencing difficulties with their placements

Set up and implement new housing rules for students staying in homestays, in order to involve them in the relationship with the family and have them think of their homestay experience as an exchange to which both the host and student contribute


Student Apartments and Residence Halls

Regularly visit the student apartment and residence halls in order to cultivate relationships with provider, staff and organization 

Help manage leases, insurance policies and utilities contracts for housing units (EDF, cleaning, etc.)

Complete apartment inventory as well as check-in and check-out forms in terms of cleanliness and possible damage before students’ arrival and departure.

Actively communicate IES housing policies and billing practices to students 

Ensure that minor maintenance work is completed; efficiently handle issues related to heating/hot water with the residence’s staff and when necessary, take the initiative to call the concerned third party (plumber, electrician) to successfully resolve problems.

Organize and implement the cleaning of student units at the end of each session or when necessary

Participate in Resident Assistants (RAs) recruitment & training

Work closely with Resident Assistants (RAs) to ensure the successful functioning of the student apartments & oversee activities organized by the RAs to promote and develop real connections between IES Abroad students and the host student community

Monitor and/or enforce apartment inspections to avoid deterioration of property.


Student Visas

Communicate effectively with students, host family and providers, and organize orientation session about visa process 



Skills :

Experience and competence in housing management

Good knowledge of conflict management 

Strong communication, Interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well in a team or autonomously 

Ability to contribute to the well-being of diverse individuals and communities  

Must be fluent in French and English

Strong organizational skills 

Must be preauthorized to work in France

Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree required - Master's degree preferred

Experience with both French and US educational systems

Conditions :

Occasional overnight field trip with students outside of Paris; 

Adaptable schedules according to program needs

Emergency on-call duty: participate in emergency phone rotation and other emergency duties
